If you are preparing for the IBPS Clerk exam (Customer Service Associate), the age limit is one of the first things to check — and one of the most misunderstood. Two things decide whether your age fits: your age on one fixed cut-off date, and your category. Get either of them wrong and you may prepare for months only to find your application rejected. This guide explains the IBPS Clerk age rule in simple words, with worked examples.
The key facts
As per recent IBPS Clerk notifications, the age rule is:
- Age limit: 20 to 28 years.
- Counted on: 1 September of the exam year.
- Both the minimum (20) and the maximum (28) apply on that cut-off date — not on the exam day, and not on the last date to apply.
Graduation is the education condition for IBPS Clerk — this article covers age only.
The age limits in one table
| Detail | Rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | 20 years |
| Maximum age (General / EWS) | 28 years |
| Cut-off date for counting age | 1 September of the exam year |
How the 1 September cut-off works
IBPS fixes a single date — 1 September of the exam year — and counts every candidate’s age on that date. It does not matter when the prelims or mains are held, or when you submit the form. You must have completed 20 years but not crossed 28 years on 1 September.
Think of it as a snapshot: IBPS takes everyone’s age on that one morning and applies the rule. If your 20th birthday is even one day after the cut-off, you are underage for that cycle; if your 29th birthday is one day before it, you are overage. A difference of even one day can change your eligibility, which is why checking on the exact cut-off date matters so much.
Worked examples (cut-off: 1 September 2027)
(a) Born 10 October 2006 → On 1 September 2027 this candidate is 20 years old (turned 20 on 10 October 2026) — meets the IBPS Clerk minimum age of 20. Eligible by age.
(b) Born 20 August 1999 → Turned 28 on 20 August 2027, so on the cut-off date this candidate is 28 years and a few days old — above the General maximum of 28. Not eligible as a General candidate, but within the SC/ST effective maximum of 33 with relaxation.
(c) Born exactly 1 September 1999 → Exactly 28 years old on the cut-off date — a true borderline case. IBPS notifications print an exact birth-date range (“born not earlier than / not later than” certain dates), and that range is the final word. If your birthday falls exactly on the cut-off, read those two dates in your notification carefully.
Age relaxation for reserved categories
Relaxation is added to the maximum age only — the minimum stays 20 for everyone:
| Category | Relaxation | Effective maximum age |
|---|---|---|
| OBC | +3 years | 31 years |
| SC / ST | +5 years | 33 years |
| PwBD | +10 years | 38 years |
The exact relaxation rules, including combined concessions, are given in the notification — always confirm there.
Why candidates get rejected on age
Most age rejections are not because the candidate is clearly too young or too old — they happen at the borders. The three most common mistakes: (1) counting age on the exam date instead of the cut-off date; (2) assuming the maximum is “about 28” and ignoring the extra days after the last birthday; (3) claiming a relaxation without checking that the notification allows it for the post. Each of these takes ten seconds to verify with a calculator and the notification’s birth-date range.

Frequently asked questions
Does the minimum age also get relaxation for reserved categories?
No. Relaxation is added only to the maximum age. The minimum age of 20 applies to all candidates.
Does EWS get age relaxation in IBPS Clerk?
In recent IBPS notifications, EWS does not get age relaxation — the maximum stays 28. The notification is final.
My birthday is within a few days of the cut-off. What should I do?
Calculate your exact age on the cut-off date with our Age Calculator, then compare it against the notification’s “born not earlier than / not later than” range. That range is the final authority.
Where is the final rule written?
In the notification’s birth-date range — the “born not earlier than / not later than” dates. Whatever this guide says, those two dates in your year’s notification decide.
