SSC GD Constable Age Limit Explained – How Age Is Counted

SSC GD Constable is one of the biggest government recruitments in India, and lakhs of candidates apply every cycle. The age rule looks simple — 18 to 23 years — but the cut-off date and the relaxation rules cause a lot of confusion, especially for candidates whose birthdays fall near the cut-off. This guide explains the SSC GD age limit in simple words, with worked examples.

The key facts

As per recent SSC GD Constable notifications:

  • Age limit: 18 to 23 years.
  • Counted on: 1 January of the exam year.
  • Both the minimum (18) and the maximum (23) apply on that cut-off date — not on the exam day or the date you fill the form.

How the 1 January cut-off works

SSC fixes 1 January of the exam year as the single date on which every candidate’s age is counted. Your age on New Year’s Day decides your eligibility for that cycle. If you turn 18 on 31 December, you are eligible; if you turn 24 on 1 January itself, you have crossed the limit for the General category.

The notification also prints the exact birth-date range — candidates must have been born not earlier than and not later than the given dates — and that range is the final word in any borderline case. Do not rely on your memory of the rule; find those two dates in the notification and check your date of birth against them.

Worked examples (cut-off: 1 January 2028)

(a) Born 15 December 2009 → Turned 18 on 15 December 2027, so on 1 January 2028 this candidate is 18 years old — meets the SSC GD minimum age of 18. Eligible by age.

(b) Born 2 January 2004 → On 1 January 2028 this candidate is 23 years and 364 days old — still within the 23-year maximum. A near-boundary case, but inside the limit.

(c) Born 1 January 2004 → Exactly 24 years old on the cut-off date — above the General maximum of 23. However, this candidate is within the SC/ST effective maximum of 28 with relaxation.

Notice how the whole decision can hang on a single day. This is exactly why the notification’s birth-date range matters more than any article — including this one.

Age relaxation for reserved categories

Relaxation is added to the maximum age only — the minimum stays 18 for everyone:

CategoryRelaxationEffective maximum age
OBC+3 years26 years
SC / ST+5 years28 years

The exact relaxation rules are given in the notification — always confirm there.

GD also has physical tests (PET / PMT)

Unlike most other SSC exams, GD Constable also tests your body, not just your age and knowledge. After the written exam, qualified candidates face the Physical Efficiency Test (race) and the Physical Measurement Test (height, chest for male candidates, and weight standards).

These standards differ by category, gender and region, so we are not listing numbers here — read the height, chest and race standards in your year’s notification and prepare accordingly. Many candidates clear the written exam and the age check but stumble at the physical stage, so start running practice early rather than waiting for the result.

Frequently asked questions

I turn 18 a few days after the cut-off. Can I still apply?
No. The minimum age of 18 must be completed on the cut-off date (1 January) itself. Even one day short means you are not eligible for that cycle.

Is there any relaxation in the minimum age?
No. Relaxation applies only to the maximum age.

I am OBC and 27 years old on the cut-off. Can I apply?
No — the OBC effective maximum is 26. Relaxation adds exactly 3 years to the 23-year cap, not a day more.

Can I apply if I am 23 but in my final year of 10th class?
SSC GD’s education condition is 10th pass, and age is counted separately from it. This article covers age only — check the education and physical conditions in the notification too.

Where are the final age and physical standards written?
In the SSC GD notification of your cycle — the birth-date range for age, and the PET/PMT section for physical standards. That document is the final authority.
