Am I Eligible for IBPS PO? Age Limit and Relaxation Explained

IBPS PO age doubts are very common. Many candidates first look at the exam, the posts and the application dates, but the real starting point is age. If your age does not fit the notification, the application cannot move forward, even if everything else is ready. For IBPS PO, two things matter most: your age on the cut-off date and your category.

This guide explains the age rule in simple words. It uses the age limits seen in recent IBPS PO notifications and shows worked examples with a cut-off date of 1 August 2027. Read the examples slowly, then check your own date of birth with the free tools linked below. The official notification for your exam year is always the final word.

Key facts

Recent IBPS PO notifications set the age limit at 20–30 years. Your age is counted on 1 August of the exam year. This means both limits are checked on that same date: you must have completed 20 years by 1 August, and you must not have crossed the maximum age that applies to your category on 1 August.

The minimum age is not relaxed. Category relaxation is added only to the maximum age. So a reserved-category candidate still needs to be at least 20 years old on the cut-off date.

The education condition for IBPS PO is graduation.

Why the cut-off date matters

The cut-off date can change the answer even when two birthdays are close. A candidate who turns 20 just before 1 August is treated differently from a candidate who turns 20 just after 1 August. The same thing happens near the upper limit: a few days after the 30th birthday can take a General candidate above the maximum, while the same age may still fit after category relaxation.

This is why you should not guess from your current age. Always calculate your age as on 1 August of the exam year, in years, months and days. If the result is very close to 20 or to your category maximum, read the birth-date limits printed in the notification word by word.

Worked examples (cut-off: 1 August 2027)

The three examples below use the same cut-off date, 1 August 2027, so you can compare them directly.

Example (a): Born 15 July 2007

This candidate turns 20 on 15 July 2027. That birthday comes before the cut-off date, so on 1 August 2027 the age is 20 years. The minimum age condition is met, so the candidate is eligible by age.

Example (b): Born 15 September 1997

On 1 August 2027, this candidate is 29 years old. The 30th birthday will come later, on 15 September 2027. Because the age on the cut-off date is below the maximum of 30, the candidate is eligible by age.

Example (c): Born 20 July 1997

This candidate turned 30 on 20 July 2027. On 1 August 2027, the age is 30 years and a few days. For a General candidate, that is above the maximum of 30 years. But if the notification’s relaxation applies, the same age is within the limit for OBC, where the maximum becomes 33, and for SC/ST, where the maximum becomes 35.

Example (c) shows why category matters. The date of birth is the same, but the maximum age is different because relaxation is added to the upper limit.

Age relaxation table

Relaxation means extra years added to the maximum age. It does not reduce the minimum age of 20. The table below uses the relaxation values given for recent IBPS PO notifications.

CategoryRelaxationMaximum age
OBC+3 years33 years
SC/ST+5 years35 years
PwBD+10 years40 years

So the minimum stays 20 for every category in this table. Only the maximum changes: 33 for OBC, 35 for SC/ST and 40 for PwBD, when the notification gives that relaxation.

How to check yourself, step by step

  1. Write down your date of birth exactly as it appears on your documents.
  2. Take the cut-off date as 1 August of the exam year.
  3. Calculate your exact age on that date in years, months and days.
  4. First compare your age with the minimum of 20 years.
  5. Then add your category relaxation to the maximum of 30, if your category gets relaxation.
  6. If your age is very close to either limit, read the birth-date limits in the notification carefully before you apply.

FAQ

Can a final-year student apply?

Only if the notification’s result-date condition is met. Check that condition in the notification of your exam year. This article covers age only, so do not use it alone to decide the education part.

Is EWS given age relaxation?

In recent IBPS notifications, EWS does not get age relaxation. The notification for your exam year is final, so read its relaxation table before applying.

My age is exactly 30 on the cut-off date — am I eligible?

This is a borderline case. Read the notification’s exact wording, which usually says candidates must not have been born earlier or later than given dates. Those birth-date limits in the notification are the final word, so match your date of birth with them directly instead of guessing from the number 30 alone.

Age rules here are summaries of recent notifications, and the notification for your exam year is the final authority. Please read our Disclaimer and always confirm your eligibility in the official IBPS notification before applying.
