SBI PO and SBI Clerk Age Limit Explained

SBI PO and SBI Clerk are two of the most applied-for bank exams in India, and every year lakhs of candidates ask the same question before applying: am I within the age limit? The confusion is understandable, because SBI does not count your age on the exam day. In recent SBI notifications, your age is counted on 1 April of the exam year, and the two posts have different limits. This guide explains the SBI PO and SBI Clerk age limits in simple words, shows worked examples on the cut-off date, and lists the relaxation for reserved categories. Always remember: the official notification of your exam year is the final authority.

SBI age limits at a glance

These are the age limits SBI has used in its recent PO and Clerk notifications:

ExamMinimum ageMaximum age (General)Age counted on
SBI PO21 years30 years1 April of the exam year
SBI Clerk20 years28 years1 April of the exam year

Notice the difference: Clerk lets you start one year earlier, at 20, but its maximum is also lower, at 28. PO starts at 21 and allows you up to 30.

How the 1 April cut-off date works

Both the minimum and the maximum age are checked on one single date — 1 April of the exam year. Your age on the exam day, or on the last date to apply, does not matter for eligibility. If you turn 21 even one day after 1 April, you have not completed 21 years on the cut-off date, and you do not meet the PO minimum. The same applies at the top end: if you have crossed the maximum age by even one day on 1 April, you are above the limit for the General category. This is why candidates born just a few days apart can get completely different results, and why you should always calculate your age exactly on the cut-off date — not approximately, and not on today’s date.

Worked examples (cut-off date: 1 April 2027)

Let us check three cases against the 1 April 2027 cut-off date.

Example 1 — the PO minimum age. Born 10 May 2005 → on 1 April 2027 this candidate is 21 years old — meets the SBI PO minimum age of 21. So this candidate is eligible by age for SBI PO, subject to the other conditions in the notification.

Example 2 — exactly at the Clerk maximum. Born 15 Feb 1999 → this candidate is 28 years old on 1 April 2027 (they turned 28 on 15 Feb 2027). That is exactly at the Clerk maximum for the General category, so they are still within the limit. But a candidate born even one day earlier, on 14 Feb 1999, would be 28 years and about 1.5 months old on the cut-off date — above the General maximum of 28, and not eligible for Clerk unless category relaxation applies to them.

Example 3 — OBC relaxation for PO. An OBC candidate for SBI PO born 20 Mar 1996 → this candidate is 31 years old on 1 April 2027. That is above the General maximum of 30, but OBC candidates get 3 years of relaxation, so their effective maximum is 33. At 31, this candidate is within the limit for the OBC category.

Age relaxation for reserved categories

Reserved categories get extra years added to the maximum age. The minimum age does not change for any category. The relaxation given in recent SBI notifications is:

CategoryRelaxationSBI PO effective maximumSBI Clerk effective maximum
OBC+3 years33 years31 years
SC / ST+5 years35 years33 years
PwBD+10 years40 years38 years

The exact category rules and conditions are given in the notification — read that part carefully, because the notification decides the details.
