NEET and JEE Photo Rules – Complete Checklist (White Background, Face, Size)

Every year, many NEET and JEE applications run into trouble for a very small reason: the photograph. NTA rejects many photos for small rule mistakes — a wrong file size, a dark background, a photo where the face is too small, or a photo edited with a filter. None of these mistakes is difficult to fix, but you have to know the rules before you upload.

This checklist follows the photo rules NTA has used in recent NEET, JEE and CUET information bulletins. Read it point by point, check your photo against each point, and only then upload. Remember one thing throughout: the information bulletin of your exam year is always final, so if anything here differs from your bulletin, follow the bulletin.

1. Size and format

In recent NTA bulletins, the photograph file must be between 10 KB and 200 KB, in JPG/JPEG format. Both ends of the range matter. A file above 200 KB can be rejected for being too big, and a file below 10 KB can also create a problem because it is outside the range the bulletin gives.

Before you upload, check the size of the exact file you are going to submit — not the original photo in your gallery, but the final file. If the final file is above 200 KB, compress it into the range first. If it is far below 10 KB, use a better-quality original so the result lands inside the range.

2. Background and face

Recent bulletins ask for a plain white or light background, with your face covering most of the photo — around 80% of the frame. This is where many home photos fail: the photo is taken from too far away, so the face looks small, or the background is a room full of objects instead of a plain wall.

  • Background should be plain white or light-coloured, with nothing busy behind you.
  • Your face should cover most of the photo — around 80% of the frame in recent bulletins.
  • Both ears should be visible.
  • Your eyes should be clearly open.
  • Do not wear a cap.
  • Do not wear sunglasses or goggles.
  • Spectacles are allowed only if you normally wear them.

A simple way to check: open the photo and look only at the face area. If the face looks small in the frame, if one ear is hidden, or if the background shows doors, curtains or other people, retake the photo before uploading.

3. Photo quality

Use a recent, colour, passport-style photo that is sharp and clear. The face should be easy to see, with no shadows falling on it and no red-eye effect. A blurry or dark photo may look acceptable on a small phone screen but still fail the bulletin’s rules.

Also avoid using a scanned copy of an old printed photo if it looks faded. Old prints lose clarity when they are scanned, and a faded photo is harder to match with you. A fresh photo, taken in good light against a plain background, is always the safer choice.

4. Name/date boards and edits

Do not add any text or board to the photo, and do not edit it with filters. The photo you upload should be the plain photo itself — no name board, no date board, no beauty filter and no colour-changing edit. Anything drawn or written on the photo can go against the bulletin.

Some years, bulletins have asked for something extra — for example postcard-size copies, or specific copies of the photo to carry with you. If your year’s bulletin asks for anything extra, follow the bulletin exactly. Also note that many bulletins instruct you to bring the same photo to the exam centre, so keep extra copies of the exact photo you uploaded.

5. Signature

The signature has its own rules. In recent bulletins, the signature file should be 4–30 KB. Sign in running handwriting — your normal signature, not capital letters — with a black or blue pen on white paper. Take a clear, close photo of the signature and check that the final file is inside the 4–30 KB range before uploading.

Fix your photo now

If your photo file is above 200 KB, shrink it with our free Compress Photo to Exact KB tool. If you still need to take or crop the photo itself, use our Passport Photo Maker to make the proper passport-style size. Both tools run in your browser — your photo is never uploaded.

FAQ

My photo has a blue background — will NTA accept it?

Recent bulletins ask for a white or light background. A blue background goes against that, so retake the photo against a plain light wall to be safe.

Can I wear spectacles?

If you wear spectacles regularly, recent bulletins have allowed them. Sunglasses or tinted glasses are not allowed — your eyes must be clearly visible.

Where are the final rules?

In the Information Bulletin of your exam year, on the official NTA or exam website. That bulletin is always final — this checklist only summarises the rules recent bulletins have used.

Photo rules can change with every exam cycle, and MiniAppStar is not a government website. Please read our Disclaimer and always confirm the final photo rules in your exam year’s information bulletin before you apply.
